Dinner at DADEO

October 15, 2008

Our good friends got back from a 3 week trip to Paris and Italy last week so we met up at DADEO for some dinner to catch up.

Weather is getting colder and I (hush, safety police!) sometimes forgo my helmet for a warm hat. I know one can have the best of both worlds (wearing a toque or something underneath a helmet) but I just like the look of a hat on its own.

I'm in my new green tights and Marc Jacobs double breasted navy trench with a crochet wool cap. Under the coat I had on a alternating grey striped v neck sweater dress with bracelet length sleeves.

Don is with his Batavus in his peacoat and seaman hat. I like that he's standing in front of the knives sign.

love the green tights.

I'm totally inspired by your fashion style these days. I'm in a rut.

That's funny - I was thinking that you looked especially cute in that photo... didn't realize it was because you were sans-helmet until I read your text! I've been reading too many european bike blogs where going helmetless is the norm!

Don't worry about the helmet...for casual cycling making smart choices while riding seems like a better beat.

I do wear a helmet for road biking or mtn biking where the risks of a crash is much higher.

cheers,

Vik

Your hat looks excellent! I never wear a helmet because I can't stand the look and feel of them. I'm a terrible example for the kids on my block. Anyways, great blog, I'm a regular reader.

I stuck a motor on the back of my bike ... and now have to wear a helmet ... so I chose one dedicated to one of my favorite football teams ... :-)

Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for liking my fashions:) It feels good to know people (other than myself) dig my digs. Thanks for reading!

burrito,

I know, sometimes sans helmet does look so super cute, but I still always like something on my head to keep my bangs from going everywhere. And, seeing as I got hit by a car the other day, I'm glad I usually wear a helmet!

Hi Kathy,

Yeah, I think it's both important to set an example of style for kids in the 'hood:) How do you like your Electra? I haven't ridden mine in a while, but I like the recumbent posture and coaster breaks. Means I can carry a coffee at the same time!

miss sarah,
I like my electra, but deep down in my heart, I know i want an authentic dutch bike, as that was my original inspiration for getting this style of bike. The electra is super comfy to ride though, and really light, which i love.

Hi Kathy,

I agree, I think the electra has a very beautiful frame and I like the simplicity. It's really easy to ride and has a relaxed posture, and being light is definitely nice too! I still have mine and am planning to put a hitch on it so it can be my cargo bike (when I'm pulling our little cargo trailer thing). I'd highly recommend trying a Batavus (if you're slightly taller than 5'2 an Old Dutch might fit you beautifully). The Batavus are built like tanks and have a HUGE wheel base so you just roll and roll. Plus, they're quite affordable at only $700-$800.

I'd ride a Batavus, but they're too big for me;( I love my Pashley though. Also, riding a heavier bike means TONS of momentum and on the streets of a northern prairie city? It's rad. I'm not gonna lie, I do use my gears much more (on the electra I'd just use the 3rd gear most of the time and ride it like it was a 1 speed). But, riding the Pashley is a way better workout and I'm a far stronger rider too now:)

I still love my electra too, it's what got me into biking and not changing into dumb clothes to do it. I'm far too attached to get rid of it! You heard about the factory recall? There's a problem with our chainguards!

I'm 5'6" so a Batavus might fit just right! Maybe I'll start looking at other options in a year or so. For now I'm going to ride my Electra as much as I can. :)

Kathy

Oh and yes, I heard about the recall, but I haven't really looked into it.
