SPACE FOR A HEADER PICTURE

Ottawa and Toronto

April 6, 2009

Here is a picture my friend Brian took of me yesterday, I was laughing heartily at something silly my friend Bryce was doing. We were having a coffee on the patio at a little joint called Sublime in Kensington Market.

I'm back from my lapse in posting due to a trip out to Ottawa and Toronto. Don and I were originally planning to go to Chicago, but international travel is a no-no when 32 weeks pregnant. I'm still 31 as of this past weekend, but back when we booked the tickets it wasn't entirely clear exactly how many weeks pregnant I was. Anyway, we decided to stay domestic and since I've never been to our nation's capital... we went. We had a handful of days there to check out cool old parliament buildings and spent a good couple of afternoons at the War Museum and the Museum of Civilization.

We took the train to Toronto and were happy to see people riding bikes everywhere! Got to hang out and catch up with many of our good friends, and ate excellent food constantly. Unfortunately, I didn't get my hands on a bike while I was in Toronto. Don and I walked, took the streetcars, and rode the TTC instead. I love transit, but I missed having a bike. My feet hurt.

Sounds like a lovely trip! I know what you mean about missing your bike. Not being able to cycle is even worse when you have to watch other people cycling. For that case it would be handy to have a folding bike that I bring along _all the time ;-).

Hi Anna,

Yeah, walking is just so SLOW. And I do have a foldy, but I don't really like lugging it on the plane. Haven't really tried, though! And it's not nearly as fun to ride as my 'real' bikes. I hear the Bromptons are a much more excellent ride than the Dahon that I have.

Vancouver is cool for renting bikes. I wonder if Toronto is the same?

I'm sure I could have found bike rental, I also just hate riding bikes that are ugly so a lot of the time when you rent a bike you have to ride what they have. Depending on the selection, I'd rather walk, anyway. It was a choice not to bike, I could have just borrowed one from a friend. We were staying so centrally downtown that everything was absolutely possible on foot - I think I'm extra tired because I weight a good 25 pounds more than I used to!

If you come to Chicago in the future, track me down and you can borrow my Oma :) Down with ugly rental bikes!

Dottie,

Thanks for the offer! Just be careful, you might not see your Oma again:) Or, I'll just hop on the back rack and we can race around town, Beijing style. Oh yeah!

Chiara,

The city was great! We have lots of expatriot friends there so it was good time all around. Kensington had a fantastic vibe! We went to an African drum store, and a guitar store, and played lots of instruments.
