Civic Union Dinner

Don and I went to a civic union retirement dinner this evening. It was the first really beautiful spring weather we've had! Warm, sunny, and NOT windy. I've been riding the Amsterdam lately in this 8th month of pregnancy because it's lighter than the Pashley and an easier ride. Note that I didn't say "better" ride because the two bikes are very different. I love my Pashley. She requires more muscle, but I like that because she also performs better as an all around every day bike, and she is sturdy and tough.

The Amsterdam is very easy going. The fact that she's lighter just makes pedaling around easy with all my other extra weight. They are both good bikes.

My mom has been very sweet throughout the pregnancy and has continually gotten me maternity clothes so that I might look pretty. She bought me this cute spring dress a few weeks ago and I really like it. The sandals, of course, are those aforementioned new ones. Don doesn't like them. He reserves disdain for wedges.

Here is handsome Don on his Batavus Favoriet! Nothing says style like Hugo Boss and a Batavus.

When were you due again? My sis-in-law is due next month, and she really shows!

It's nice that the wind died down, eh? It was sunny all week, but the northern wind was FREEZING! Believe it or not it was a nice 22c today! I took advantage of it and biked all over today and then had lunch in a park on a hill. The leaves are just coming out.

Here's a pic of me and my bike with her new
Red Twig Blossom Basil panniers that I got last week, just in time for blossoms.

Your sundress is super cute, and the shoes are charming although I admit that I'm not a fan of wedges either.
Have you thought about what kind of child carrier you will use with the bikes?
I started with a seat and quickly abandoned it in favour of a trailer that I used until the kid was about 4 years old, and then for another several years as my cargo mover.
Thing is, I'm not sure a trailer can connect to the Pashley or the Amsterdam. You may have to talk to the Curbside guys to see about an upfront child seat...

You both look fantastic! There are few sights cooler than 8-month pregnant cycling in sun dresses and wedges :)

I like your wedges and outfit! Yay for nice Spring weather. It's nice in HK too. Not too hot...yet...

Carolyn,

I'm due (officially) on June 7th. I'm currently in week 35 so I'm probably at the same time as your sis in law! Apparently Asian ladies tend to go into labour early. I hope this is true! I think week 37 would be ideal for me:) Like I have any choice in the matter!

Hi Morgan,

I've been doing a lot of research on the kid-towing. Even with a front mounted bobike the baby can't go into it with a helmet on until 9ish months. Basically when he's not so floppy anymore. I do want to get a front mount baby seat, though! They easily detach and reattach for when I need it and when I don't.

People have told me about strapping the baby's car seat into a trailer so I'll see how that all works when I have the baby seat, and the trailer. Two moms have volunteered their trailers as hand-me-downs so I'll take a look at how they work when I get them. One was used for years but now their kid has outgrown it, the other was purchased and never used because the seasons didn't line up and they just never got on it.

I might have to get a trailer bike... but I'm always up for getting more bikes:)

Please don't go into labour in two weeks! I need Don's help on the kitchen. Rad to see you back on the Amsterdam -- I really love them. I've only been riding mine lately, not the road bike. And one of my friends at work, who is legitimately Dutch, just bought one as well. That makes five dudes I know with Amsterdams! Electra really found a market with the lightweight Dutch city bike.

Dan,

I still like the original plan of Don helping you with the kitchen while Leanne comes here to cook me food. In both cases everybody is doing what they're best at:)

I do like the Amsterdam! It's such a different ride than Pashley. With the baby, I just like the posture better (it's more cruiser-y) and the gears are... easier to pedal with? Sort of closer to the one speed coasting road bike feel. If that makes any sense...

That helmet on the handlebars is going to do a shit load of good when some random car nails his Hugo Boss clad arse.

Fuck it people, if you have dependants, you have a duty to be as safe as.

Hi Hurb!

We took that picture when we got home. So, Don is just coasting on the sidewalk in front of our house. We don't usually ride on the sidewalks either. In retrospect, I actually told him to take it off because I think that particular helmet looks ugly with that bike.

If we weren't going to wear helmets that day, I don't think Don would spend the time to drape one over his handlebars for the duration of our outing.

You're not the only person to make these helmet observations, however. I find it funny how OMG people get about the "rules" of riding, I think it's all these restrictions and judgments that prevent more people from taking part in bike commuting.

I have to comment once more because your blue wedges are superb! Love that you biked in them! S.

You are both oh-so-stylish. Also loved your previous post. One of the things I do not like about the idea of being pregnant is facing all those people with opinions...

(and kudos on handling the tactless helmet comment with grace)

miss sarah said...

Oh Trisha,

The opinions and comments... I hate to say it but it's one of those things where it feels awful to be right. I had braced myself for all the painful social interactions with the general public but it did little to mitigate the frustration.

However, I think it's been a learning experience and hey... probably all worth it to raise a cool little citizen?

Thanks for the encouragement:)

P.S. About the helmet comment... I wish people who think I am stupid would at least first work on their reading comprehension (because I address a lot of peoples' criticisms my my posts where they to read carefully before commenting). Also, if they could just express their disapproval in proper sentences that would be good too! Meaning, I could take the debate more seriously.

Dear Sarah,

I love your blog, and I love the picture of Don on the Batavus favoriet. As a Dutch girl this blog is extra cool to me, since so much stuff that is so alien to most of the people around you is so completely normal to us. We can get a nice bike for 80 Euros (or from a junkie for 20Euro's ;-), nobody wears helmets (that's for Germans and other foreigners ) unless doing actual bike-racing, and your average Dutch mother will be seen in traffic with one child on the front, one on the back, three bags of shopping on the handlebars AND one more 5-year-old on their own bike cycling next to her...In Amsterdam.

now all these things are different, but a man on such a 1950s bicycle in a suit is seen as just as classy here as in Canada.(we don't even call them fiets, the normal word, but out of respect we call them 'rijwiel' = the old fashioned word for bicycle, a 'herenrijwiel' = a gentlemen's bike)

Cycle on!

Eliza
