First, my shirt today. Faux bow-collar on a cap sleeve sweater. Wore it with wide legged jeans and red pumps.
Next, Dexter had his weekly sleepover at my mom's so I naturally made plans to hang out with a friend. Don usually isn't home from work until late, and this is especially true since it's budget time. I don't bother sitting around waiting for him to come home. Instead, I spent some much needed quality time with one of my best lady friends.
My mom came to pick up the baby and I was getting ready to go out when she commented, "You're going OUT?" I told her it was basically a waste if I stayed at home while she was taking care of the baby. Any mom out there knows this would have been a lost opportunity! The following conversation took place. And we have this conversation often.
Mom: You're riding your BIKE?! So dangerous!
Miss Sarah: Not really, I do it all the time.
Mom: But it's COLD!
Miss Sarah: It's around 6 degrees, not even freezing. And I wear a jacket.
Mom: I don't know why you don't drive.
Miss Sarah: It takes me less than 15 mins to ride, and then I don't have to find parking. I don't like driving. It's boring.
Mom: I guess. I saw lots of people biking in Toronto!
Miss Sarah: Yes, and I do it here, in Edmonton.
Mom: I don't think you should do it when it snows.
Miss Sarah: It's not snowing.
Mom: Oh, okay. Well, don't do it when you're pregnant.
Miss Sarah: (No Comment)
I think mom is actually used to me riding now. The whole exchange has become a formality. My mom is like a kid sometimes. She really likes repetition. I say that with affection!
One of the great things about hanging out with my beloved lady friend, Leanne, is that she loves cooking. I cook too, enjoy entertaining, and I can churn out good eats. But, most days I work quite late myself so I eat things that are simple due to time constraints.
It was delicious to run over to Leanne's and eat a tasty plate of cauliflower with lemon and olives, and a savoury dill and shallot omelette on toast.
Leanne lives in a fantastic historical building right on Whyte avenue. You all know I'm a fan of walkable neighbourhoods. Leanne's place takes the cake as it is located right on one of the city's best streets. It's got all the pubs, bars, clubs, independent clothing shops, good eats... you name it.

Of course, the building is beautiful too. It used to be a hospital.

I locked Pashley up outside, and had to take the opportunity to document the white pick up truck parked on the street. I have this theory that the meanest cars on the road tend to be white pick up trucks and SUVs. It's just an observation. Every time I get honked at or almost run over... it's often a large white vehicle.

We saw The September Issue. I think my favourite part/person was Grace Coddington.
On the walk back from the Princess Theatre, the avenue was lit up with pretty lights. What a nice night.

Funny that you mentioned white pick-ups. I've also made that observation down here in Florida. They either drive too close or try to hook you on a turn.
I have exactly that exchange with my mother! (not the pregnant bit though...). the Dark, the Cold, be Careful, let Dad take you in the Car (can put the Brompton in the boot) (the house to station bit is the only bit I usually cycle!)
mothers I guess :)
My family has finally become accustomed, but if they do something like meet me at work, they'll drive behind my bike to our shared destination. They are not going to join me on the 2-wheeled wonder-side of the universe.
And oooh! Yay! Lights on the trees on the commercial streets. Does this mean it's OK for me to put the lights on my bushes now?
A huge second about the white pickup trucks! I first caught on to this one day when I was riding out to Sherwood Park (on the freeway - nice wide shoulders and mostly out of the wind, but source of contention with my parents:-) ) when a white pickup swerved towards me onto the shoulder as the dude in the passenger's seat yelled "get off the road!" (OK - I'm not sure what he yelled - I don't think people who yell things at cyclists from speeding cars are bright enough to figure out that it's pretty impossible to make out what someone moving at 100km/h is actually yelling). Anyways, when I got to my destination, I mumbled something about white pickup trucks to my dad, who asked "was it this guy?" and pulled out a copy of Bicycling magazine that he'd got that week with a story from a cyclist in the states who'd been run off the road by (you guessed it) a white pickup.
So yeah, white pickups & SUV's = boo!
sigh. How I wished I had:
1. a mom or mil who was close enough to take the kids for an overnight once a week.
2. friends without kids or who had equally awesome babysitting set ups.
b/c I would do as you did and have a great time. On that note- must go text my high school babysitter about this weekend to see if she is free, Mama needs a night out!
I want to see The September Issue.
My mom's big thing is me talking to strangers, now that I live in the big city. For example, when a reporter interviewed me about winter cycling and I happily sent my mom the article, she responded - That's nice honey, but be careful talking to strangers. The stranger being the reporter? Okay...
My Mom used to work at the hospital now an apartment building. It was called St. Joseph's Auxillary Hospital (or something similiar). Basically it was a hospital for seniors and she talks about the nurses she worked with and scary stories about cleaning the bodies of the recently passed. I am sure the apartments are gorgeous but I'd be afraid of spooks haunting the hallways.

Hi. Sorry to bother you.. My friend has a Pashly Princess Sov. like yours, and recently the back drum brake won't fully lock. Did you ever experience this before ?
Lorelle & Coreen - I have a hypothesis that maybe it's because a lot of these vehicles are service vehicles? I dunno... all I know is that a lot of them are more douchey than other motor vehicles.
Milady - Isn't it sweet that our parents love us so much? I don't see why they can't show this affection by buying us presents. Well, now that I think of it my mom DOES do that too:)
stylocycle - Those lights are on the avenue year round:) But, December is soon approaching... I wouldn't judge.
Dottie - My Dad's thing is always about me not wearing enough clothes, except the way he says it in Chinese literally translates to English as, "You didn't wear any clothes?" Aie-ya!
Mama - I know I am very lucky in this respect. Let me carry the torch for us both!
Ilona - I couldn't either. The suites are so unique and have so much character, but I totally (irrationally) believe in ghosts. Don doesn't and he thinks I am crazy.
Algernond - Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner. I'm awful at my comment moderation even though I'm so pleased when people leave them!
Let's see, my back wheel sometimes has trouble locking (is this what we're talking about?) But usually that's because the spoke is in the wrong place and I have to rotate the wheel a bit.
The brake though? When I press down, I always get brake satisfaction on both the front and back. Your friend has to go see her bike people to get sorted out!
