This is Tom. He rode his bike over to the bungalow tonight for some Sunday night stew and relaxing. He gives hard core a new meaning. When he arrived he sort of shrugged it off as not really a big deal. He has a toque, his warm jacket, his bike is decked out for this sort of thing... he even had a bottle of wine in his pannier! Now that is a good friend.
Don tried to take a picture of Tom out on the walk before the bike got put away but my Rebel Canon was giving the maddening "Error 99" and the precious warm air was quickly escaping from the house. No bike shot. But you guys get a Tom shot with ice in his beard. He said the only part of him that was actually cold was his thighs.
You guys may have seen my tweet. It was -37C/-34F at one point. It was COLD. I had these elaborate plans to bring Dexter and select ingredients over to my friend's place for a day of Christmas baking. I didn't go. Opted for baking at home with the baby and Dougal instead, and I made good progress on the state of our bungalow basement too (gearing up for holiday entertaining).
We made biscotti.

It's the domestic life here. No need to trouble myself with running around when I'm perfectly happy to nestle into the bungalow for hibernation when it's that cold out. Not to be a baby, I just don't want to fight it and I didn't have any imperative to be out and about.
So I content myself with drinking hot chocolate out of my new strawberry cup.

We're up to other house stuff like swapping my music studio and Dexter's bedroom, which meant needing a new lamp for the piano. It wasn't expensive nor is it fancy, but I get excited about this kind of thing.

If I would have gone out, Dexter would not have had the opportunity to wrestle with his toy worm.

And moms out there, try not to judge. I'm doing everything I can (believe me) to keep Dexter's face immaculate. He's teething. And he loves self-mutilation. Hence the face scratches.

And Dougal. He couldn't go outside for his walk, even a short one, without his boots and coat on. Disclaimer! These are all from my mom. I have never gone out to buy Dougal dog-clothes before, with the exception of the time I got him a shirt and tie. But, it was an actual toddler's shirt and tie. Not dog clothes. He had been invited to an outdoor wedding and I wanted him to be dressed appropriately. Ironically, the shirt and tie combo sort of made him look like a telemarketer.

Like every year, we will survive these times. And when it gets springy and warm we'll all go insane with appreciation.
Good thing I really like my bungalow. You'll be seeing a lot of it in the months to come.

Dougal's boots are adorable! And I suspect much needed at -34C. I didn't even know that it got that cold in places where people other than Inuits live!
Everything about this is adorable :) I fall into hibernation mode, too. Spent all of Sunday in my pajamas, baking chocolate chip cookies and reading. That's a benefit of winter for me!
Funny, I'm about to bake biscotti for xmas too. But with pistachios and dried cherries in the mix.
I'm curious about the metal legs showing in the background of the photo of Dexter wrestling with his worm toy. Do they belong to a Barcelona chair or ottoman?
do you know what kind of boots Dougal has & would you recommend them? i'm thinking of finally getting some for my pooch this winter. she loves snow and would play in it all day if i allowed her, but the salt worries me. your day in looks & sounds lovely!
I think I well like your bungalow too, judging from your snaps. Yum--biscotti. I am a particular fan of almond biscotti.
No judgment on the parenting front. We are all just doing our best :) and it is most humbling.
Natalie - Even I'm surprised it got this cold. But it shouldn't last more than a week, max. Then it goes back to normal cold. I will survive!
Dottie - Hibernation gives us time to shop online for more dresses:)
dagmara - Good nice! It's a Barcelona chair AND ottoman. Except mine are in chocolate brown. I spotted a tan one on sale years ago but that was still when I had roommates and I thought it would get wrecked. I had coveted one ever since that one sold, so when this brown one was available (black doesn't work at my house) Don got it for me as a "Thanks for giving birth" and also birthday present for me. We're big fans of mid century modern design.
genevieve- Sure I'd recommend. They have velcro straps but DO fall off sometimes. I'd get two sets so you could account for losing some, and make sure the size is right. If they're too big snow gets caught up around the ankles.
Sara - Yeah! These biscotti are hazelnut and white chocolate but the aforementioned pistachio and cherries sound really good. People are always telling me about how Dexter probably has a milk allergy and that's why he scratches but... he drinks mom's milk with formula fill-in when he's being babysat. Plus, the doctor told me if he was actually allergic he wouldn't be gaining weight and growing properly. He's obviously growing...
holy cold batman!!!
someday when it is less cold, can you take naps of your bungalow. I have a bungalow fetish. I don't have one, but am sort of slowly turning mine house into a quasy one. ( ie we got a new door and got the arts and craft door for a cute bungalow look. I have arts and crafts detailing in Dining room and added the floral wall paper. We got an artsy door knocker. little things. But I'd love to see the real thing...
Tom is totally hardcore.
thanks for the boot info, miss sarah!
I do not trust children with clean faces.
my sister in calgary told me its flipping freezing over there.. its a balmy 2 degrees here in Toronto, warm enough for me my wife and son to ride but we hate that its dark before 6pm. I cant wait to ride in the snow. Me and my son built an igloo this time last year. but no snow yet.
hope you get the Bobike for christmas,... now if they could only make a travel friendly bike seat..
do you have a dog basket?
Merry Christmas!
fella - yes, and so dreamy.
gen - always happy to obliged with shoe info
Adrienne - Well said!
'Xander - I'll just do the bobike as a carry on. I'm sure there's some way to fasten it to my luggage as I roll that stuff into the city on the train. Question: Does the train now go straight downtown or am I getting this mixed up with Vancouver?
No dog basket. Just a dog that happens to fit into my baskets. Dougal is a very experienced bike passenger by now. He knows how to brace himself on the basket's edges.
