The Dickensian Element.

The title of this post was inspired by a tweet by @dkazor. For those who don't know, it's a newspaper in-joke from The Wire. An aside. It was this show that made sure Don and I eliminated "Marlow" from the short list of possible names for Dexter. I was thinking Marlow, inspired by the character in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. After becoming acquainted with the character Marlo Stanfield in this HBO series... there is no way I could ever name my child after a sociopathic drug dealer.

Now, naming my child after a sociopathic serial killer? That's okay!

FYI. Dexter the baby is not named after Dexter the TV show. Don and I haven't even watched it, though we hear it's good. I've liked the name for years, mostly because I think Dexter Gordon the legendary jazz saxophonist is the bomb. We sort of discussed it as a joke years before the show ever came out.

Sarah: It would be so cute to have a little kid who wore sweater vests and was really smart. With the whimsy of a child but the wisdom of an old man.

Don: For sure. Poindexter!

Sarah: Is that a white people thing I don't know about?

Don: It means "nerd."

Sarah: Hahaha!

I can't guarantee you that's exactly how it happened, but you get the gist of it.

And it's Latin for "right." Awesome, no?

OKAY. Back to the Dickensian Element. I rode my bike to physio today. I don't think it's going to be something I'm doing again so long as this level of snow persists. Now, I'm not an experienced winter rider so every time I go out it's a learning experience. Taking the bike out in the snow is really fine sometimes and not at other times. I feel as though riding to the LRT station is absolutely non-problematic. Today's ride, however, took three times as long both going and coming back.

There is a bike path from my neighbourhood all the way to the physio place and it's plowed so I figured the biking wouldn't be an issue. Honestly, it's not even the weather that was bad. The temperature was about -16/3 degrees. And I wasn't even cold, particularly with the pedaling. I've got a good hat, mitts, scarf, and puffy parka. Yes, the parka has now made its debut.

It's the inconsistency that drove me crazy. So you're pedaling along for several minutes or blocks and then there's just this one little bumpy patch. Bumpy to the point where my butt got bounced several inches off my saddle. And I wasn't going fast. Bumpy to the point where at several points my wheel lodged into a low point and I could have flipped over the handlebars. Bumpy to the point where if I wasn't clenching my jaw so tight I surely could have bitten off a portion of my tongue with the whole shaken Miss Sarah syndrome that was happening! I know complaining about it doesn't encourage people to go and try this, which is counterproductive to my whole blog manifesto. I'm just being honest.

I think this is why a lot of people opt for mountain bikes in the winter. The bumps need to be conquered. They are oh-so-annoying!

Graders have been through our neighbourhood so the road is quite flat. But there are now gigantic piles of snow on either side of the road, essentially narrowing the entire thing substantially. I was riding on the sidewalk most of the time. But then you get the inconsistent conditions. I'm not precisely sure how to win with this. I think the answer is having a bike that can plow over all the inconsistencies?

There was one point where the graters had piled the snow so high, right in the middle of a cross walk. I had to pick up the Dahon and throw it up on top of the pile, climb up myself, then climb back down the other side. This sounds made up. I assure you it was real. I would have taken pictures but I was already running so late I just kept on trucking.

Good news is that I got a great work out today. Other good news is that I learned a lot. I think that particular trip to the physiotherapist will have to be made via motor vehicle in the future. I'll save my bike endeavors for the other excursions north and east of my place where I know the sidewalks are shoveled by lovely people or the streets are not busy and I can ride on the road without having a lineup of angries (angry people) behind me.

Another great thing is my new faux fur animal hat. This hobo was talking to me about it when I was unlocking the Dahon. He insists that it's a bobcat. Other people have told me coyote but I think it's a little more cat than dog. A lynx perhaps?

Here is a super cute photo of Dexter trying it on the other night.

And since we're talking about winter. These are the little boots my mom bought for him.

Winter in Edmonton is all about being prepared. And learning as we go!

I'm sorry you had such a rough ride. It really bothers me that the plows don't keep the crosswalks clear...climb over or step into the intersection are not great options. Tweeted to the city about it this morning!

You and Dexter both look adorable in the hat! I agree it's much more feline...bobcat might be right.

How does the Pashley ride in the snow? Does it also bounce you over the bumps? Have you ever "wiped out"? It is starting to snow here, and I am a little reluctant!

My wife says your hat reminds her of a red fox!

yay! I saw a cashier at the store today wearing a faux fur animal hat but it was not nearly as cool as yours but I thought of you.

I rode my bike on icy sidewalks last night and it was bumpity bump. I tried to complain to myself but thought- what would Miss Sarah do? she's keep on trucking, so I told myself to shut up. Our weather currently is no comparison to yours so I am glad I shut up.

and just: Yay

It's definitely MTB season. I think you'd enjoy riding with a mountain bike and nubby tires for sure.I used to take Isaac to school in the winter riding my MTB and he was in a chariot with thick, nubby tires that Bruce installed. It worked like a dream! My Pashley is in the basement for now.
You look good in your hat! I'm wearing a kinda similar one, for a laugh you can check out the photos in our Penner family blog: pennerchronicles.blogspot.com

trico - Meh, it's annoying but I can understand why they didn't think to clear it. They probably didn't think ANYBODY in their right mind would be going where I was going. It's equally annoying when people don't shovel their sidewalks! Part of me wonders whether the graders were done doing their thing, anyway. Oh City... I give you benefit of doubt.

Filigree - I don't usually ride Pashley in the winter. I don't think the slip factor is much different on any other bike (except a pimped out winter ride) and the brakes are really great because you can't get moisture clunked up in them. I just don't want her to get rusty. And if I DO wipe out on her I'd hate to have to fix my fenders. And nope, have never wiped out on her. If you're going to do it, practice first!

Freth - Red Fox. I like that!

Mama - Oh, I complain too:) Sometimes the ride is annoying, but you're already so far out that it's pointless to turn back. SIGH! My weather is ridiculous. I've grown up here and it never ceases to amaze me.

Judith - Okay, maybe MTB is the way I need to do this. I have a Kona, but I honestly think it's too big for me. Ask Bruce, what does he think? My Pashley is also stored away for now. Winter is not her time to shine.

Try not to get discouraged on the winter riding! It's a great opportunity to improve your fitness level (and it's fun). Also, if you ride a bike with bigger wheels, it'll be less bumpy.

I'm also in E-town, my daily commute is 20km (round trip), and the ride is often the best part of my day, even when it's cold. I've been inspired by your blog to do it with more style, and today I broke my personal record for subzero bicycle commuting in a skirt (-15).

Definitely drop by and see Bruce or the other guys. If you bring your bike he can size you up and tell you if the frame is too big for you. He always has me sit on the bike and pedal backwards (I don't know why), then makes sure my arm's reach is comfortable. Then he can recommend some grippy tires and you'll be set :) Oh, and Dexter is too cute in your hat!

I had a "not doing that again" kind of snow ride yesterday, too. Not riding when fresh snow is coming down vertically and the bike lanes are full of slush and the wind is gusting me into the middle of the lane and it's rush hour and it's dark. My heart was in my throat the whole time. Learning experience, for sure! This winter has really snuck up and surprised me and I think I forgot some of my limitations - like I am terrified of riding among cars in snow storms.

Luckily, I don't have the bumpiness problem. Our snow does not get nearly as deep as yours and then gets plowed pretty well.

LOL at the Pointdexter dialogue. I love Dexter as a little boy name (have not seen the TV show, either) and the idea of boys wearing sweater vests. Awesome hat pictures. I think it looks like ... Magical Mister Mephistopheles (the original conjuring cat).

judith - Thanks! I'll see if I can drag the Kona in. Honestly, I'm quite convinced that it's too big. I bought it off my god-brother in high school and rode it around at that time but it was never right. I love Bruce, he's always so warm and chats to me about the baby and the dog. Is it just me or is Cliff sort of grumpy sometimes? I love the guy. Sometimes I get a vibe from him like from my dad, that he doesn't feel like talking so I just be quiet.

Dottie - First day of snow is awful. I want to be all "yay bikes!" but at the end of the day I cycle because it's fun. If the annoying, scary quotient exceeds fun then I'd rather take the bus/train or just *gasp* drive. I don't think driving is evil, if people chose to make the decision responsibly (which is often not the case).

I ride in heavy snow. You ride in heavy wind-traffic. Maybe we are in fact crazy?

I think that Clif sometimes has a lot on his mind and that Bruce is usually happy esp. if he starts his mornings with dacapo, haha!Glad you liked my fur hat!
