Chamber Ball.

Went to the Chamber Ball last night. I was under the impression that it was at the Shaw Conference Centre.

I was wrong. It was actually at Edmonton's new Expo Centre.

Several months ago Don bid on a silent auction item for some boy scouts fundraiser. It was a gift certificate for a one night stay at the Westin in Edmonton plus brunch the next day. Since I thought the ball was just a block away from the hotel, we made a reservation to stay on Saturday night so we could easily walk to the function. On our way out the hotel door we had the following exchange.

Miss Sarah: How long do you think the walk will be?

Mr. Don: On the other side?

Miss Sarah: What other side?

Mr. Don: At Northlands.

Miss Sarah: Huh?

The venue was not one block away. It was far far away!

Don always assumed we were going to take the train from the downtown hotel. Obviously there was a failure in communication. Had I known we would be in for a good 10-15 minute walk after surfacing at Colisseum station, I wouldn't have worn such a huge gown and 4.5 inch heels.

I'm pretty avid to ride the bike when it makes sense, but in this case it really didn't. It didn't even make sense to take the train as I'm sure my dress would have gotten caught in the escalator or at the very least soaked with traces of uric acid from the elevators. We drove. I'm sorry! We don't do it very often, but it made the most sense taking into consideration the destination, time constraints, wardrobe and temperature.

So it was an active transportation failure.

However. Aren't you curious to see my dress?

I went to the same party two years ago and was sort of appalled at the proliferation of stretchy velour dresses. The invitation said the event was black tie, but I was absolutely overdressed. I was sort of afraid this would happen again, but I went with wearing a gown (not to be mistaken with a cocktail dress) anyway. It was cold and I figured I could tone the formality of the dress down with a cardigan.

My favourite thing about the gown are the tiered bustles on the back. I refer to them as my "butt puffs".

Don seems to have this obsession with taking pictures of me where I'm all fish-eyed and fun house looking. UGH.

The cardigan has a pretty ribbon edge and rhinestone buttons! Very pretty to look at. Takes a very long time to do up.

And it wouldn't be a Miss Sarah outfit without a neat hair thing. This one is cute and romantic.

I also wore a new purse my mommy got for me while she was on vacation in Toronto.

Telus was a sponsor at the event and had these hippo toys as centrepieces. I didn't win one, but somebody at the library board table did and gave it to me, for Dexter!

This morning we woke up and had brunch at the hotel. Sort of funny feeling like a tourist in your own city. As much as I like to travel, I still prefer life at the bungalow to any hotel. Even the very very fancy hotels. When we came home we let the Dougal loose and turned on the Wega. Simple things like that just feel like home.

yay! I feel giddy at the fact that I picked out both that hairband and the purse! They look so good together :)

Your appearance at the ball will not be forgotten and may yet inspire others to assemble original looks of their own. Something precious was lost when individuality became confused with snobbery in the minds of some. In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. Coco Chanel

That gown was totally worth driving, especially the butt puffs. Beautiful outfit. So fun to have an event with "ball" in the name and get to dress up in a gown.

Don - The most impressive thing about the purse is how much stuff it holds! I had a fan, pack of kleenex, and an iPhone in addition to the lipstick. That's basically unheard of when I'm wearing a tiny dress up purse.

Mama - Now that my hair is short-ish. I find the hairbands a really fast way to look like my hair is done.

misssable - Well, I actually think I would have preferred the one YOU got (single flower), but you have a penchant for keeping the best things for yourself. And the hairband is indeed fabulous! But didn't I tell you that I saw it at anthro but decided against getting it for mom? Yes, that's right. I'm being ungrateful. Just don't want you getting the wrong idea and thinking you're the style setter of the Chan sisters:)

Cameron - Your comment has really made my day.

Dottie - Thanks, lady. Even with our dutchy bike skirt guards... I'd have to wipe the whole bike down before I tried mounting the saddle. Though, I'm curious to try riding in a dress like this, in the summer. Just around the neighbourhood so I can see what those Victorian ladies felt like.

You can pull off outfits I can only dream of wearing. Way to go!

Stunning dress and accessories! You should definitely play Victorian lady in it some other time. :) Sounds like a good idea for a group bike ride, actually!

Miss Sarah, your dress is simply divine and so is the headband! The piece de resistance is the cardigan...I have an obsession for them, as with hats and many other things, lol.
P.S. Does baby D. roll over yet? It's so cute (and dangerous) when they learn to turn themselves over, esp. if they're on a bed!
PPS Redbike is starting their renovation and it looks a LOT better already.

Velouria - Thanks!

Kathy - I think it helps that I don't really care if people think I look crazy. But the danger there is being that girl who everyone thinks is crazy...

Trisha - Fun idea! I wonder if the corset part of the dress will actually impair breathing?

Judy - Redbike is getting renovated? Awesome! Baby D totally rolls over. You should see him on the change table. Naked and dangerous.

what a gown and 4 inch heels..., i'd love to see you rock that on a bike, and in the snow. what an editorial that would be!

cars are great in moderation, thats the reason I pay the car insurance each month. I'm not car free.. however its no longer a ball and chain.
