I'm sure you all read about the excellent AGA party I was at over the weekend. SO much fun! By the time Don and I got away from the food, drinks, and various run-ins with really fun people it was quite late. We nevertheless went through the gallery to spy on a few exhibits before hopping on the train back to the bungalow.
It was fortuitous that we didn't get into the Karsh exhibit until late because it wasn't busy at all. We therefore had time to play with the interactive display where you could create your own Karsh inspired photograph and then email it to yourself. It's this sort of joie de vivre activity that really makes me happy. Incidentally, that's the same feeling I get with biking. A kid-like feeling where something really simple puts a smile on my face.
The display is very cool. You were allowed to change the lighting and when you looked through the viewfinder the subject is upside down, etc. This is what we ended up with.
I know Madmen is such a hot show right now. I remember when I first saw previews of it on TV before the first episode aired. I would flick Don on the arm and draw his attention to the teak furniture, sunburst mirrors, and skinny ties. Just the sort of design aesthetic we love! After some consideration I think I've come to the conclusion that my love of vintage things comes from not having grown up with it. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated to Canada in the 80s so I never had the chance to visit a house with panelled basements and smoked glass ashtrays. Perhaps I'm making up for lost time?
Anyway. Don has this disturbing tendency to look like he is from the late 50s. We're not sure what it is, but he always manages to look like he's from Madmen when he's in a suit. And not because it's currently trendy. Apparently he's a spitting image of his grandfather. See?

Oh, and speaking of Madmen and Don looking vintage. Here's a picture we took of him for the Madmen casting call contest back in the summertime. We didn't get the photo entered in time because the internet broke on the night of submission.

Here I am. I was initially using my shoe as a prop, talking into it like it was a telephone. Then Don was getting me to look at his hand up in the air and now I'm just holding it. The only thing I don't like about this photo is the shape of my hand holding the shoe. Sort of graceless...
I also think my facial features look really harsh. Don assures me that he did it that way because the dramatic lighting is awesome and that making me look up high doesn't wrinkle my forehead, it gives my face expression. I think the most dramatic thing about the lighting is what it did to my cleavage!
If you're in Edmonton go make your homage to Karsh at the AGA. Then let me know how yours turned out!

The AGA is looking fantastic. The Karsh photobooth was closed on Sunday as there were way too many people there, but I look forward to going back to try it again. Great photos btw.
very very cool. ARe they high res enough to print out and frame?
Yay! The booth was open when I was there Sunday morning, but there were a lot of kids around and I didn't want to interrupt their fun. Will have to go back.
Maybe we can have another brunch-and-art date on my side of the river!
Fabulous photos!!!!! I should wear my vintage mad-men era dress and take a trip to the AGA!!! The shoe photo is hilarious yet charming.
These pictures are awesome, especially the first two. The artsy effect is very cool. Don does look like he belongs in Mad Men. He even has the name! :)
Someone's got a serious Tony Perkins thing goin' on there.
