Life Goes On.

So last weekend was rough. Dexter went onto soy formula and it just went from medium to bad to worse as the days wore on. On Friday Dexter actually popped his first little incisor! I attributed his initial fussiness and temperature to the tooth. As the weekend elapsed it was like somebody replaced awesome little Dexter with a horrible demon child. Now I know why moms of colicky babies want to hurl themselves out a window at times. There's nothing worst that seeing your sweet, adorable baby screaming with lizard tongue. Especially when there doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it.

Lizard tongue is what my mom calls hysterical Dexter. Sort of like the upside down flat face thing (a literal translation from what she calls Dexter in Chinese when he's crying). Lizard tongue is when the baby is crying so incessantly that his tongue just sort of quivers in the middle of his mouth. And since the baby's mouth never closes... lizard tongue is on constant display.

It was a weekend of supervision and reaction. I know people were just trying to be helpful with the various suggestions for his flaky cheeks. Frankly, I know the kid has eczema (I do too and it's hereditary) and I thought the cheeks were extra bad because of his excessive drooling. Edmonton is also really dry and our water is hard. Add those things up and my approach was to follow the directions of Dexter's pediatrician, keep moisturizing, monitor scratching, and wait it out. I hear lots of kids have weird skin issues in their first year. I was assuming he would grow out of it.

The soy formula change was a bad thing. The worst part about it was it went against my instincts and I did it anyway. People have been pressuring me about soy since month 4. That's what I'm most disappointed about. How I caved into pressure and did something I was never convinced of. Poor Dexter suffered for it. I won't be making that mistake again. I'm good at analyzing information. I have a decent level of reading, writing, and listening comprehension. I am a critical thinker. I should have known better. I should have gone with my gut. That's what I intend to do from now on.

Despite the challenging baby weekend, we still managed to have some fun.

Went to the Gallery for a Karsh documentary.

Came home for a chill Friday night. Chili from the slow cooker, some Olympics viewing, and Jenga.

Don bought himself a Helvetica t-shirt too. But we don't wear them at the same time.

Classic Miss Sarah. Juggling a glass of wine, the MacBook, and scrutinizing at the same time. I'm such a multi-tasker.

We went shopping for an umbrella stroller for Dexter later in the weekend. I love his bugaboo frog, but we're planning some vacations in the future that will require me to quickly get on and off of street cars and up and down stairs. The bugaboo is a multi-step process to dismantle and although it doesn't take a lot of time, it ends up in two separate pieces. We found a great little umbrella stroller that will be light enough to fold up and carry with one hand.

City and Creator LEGO was also on sale. That stuff is never on sale! We bought a few sets for Don and Dexter, to add to their collection. Here are the two boys working hard at building their new LEGO while watching Olympic hockey.

Speaking of which... go team Canada! Dexter is wearing his Canada-supporting Olympic wear.

And here is the most recent in Dougal humuliation.

But at least this one makes him look like Blade.

Dexter came home today after a few days of switching his milk back to normal. He's looking really great and super cute. The little dude is happy, crawling, drooling, and keeps grabbing objects and hitting the furniture with whatever he has in his hands. I love that guy.

Dougal is too adorable. I love it when you post pictures of him. I love the stoic look he gets while you dress him - he's clearly not impressed but he's prepared to put up with it for you.

Hurray for Dexter's first tooth! It must be a relief to find out the "root" of his suffering (bad pun intended). It's hard to trust your instincts when you get pressure from your family but I'm sure you have more confidence in yourself after this experience, right? I went through a debate about circumcision w/ my parents and I am glad that I didn't succumb to their insistence. I love my parents but sometimes it's very stressful to be under such arm-twisting.
Dougall is one stylin' dog. Not many canines can pull of that Blade look.Is it OK to admit that I'm jealous of how dainty he looks in that hair bow?
This Spring will be fun for baby D, trying new yummy food! Who knows, he might be walking by the end of the summer. Ah, how time flies!

:-). Go team Canada indeed! Love that onsie! We have some Vancouver mittens for the kids, Ben's aunt tried to get us adults some but they were sold out when she went back. Too bad for us.

The biggest lesson I learned is to listen to one's gut about parenting. Soemtimes it is hard to do, but yeah- the gut knows well if you can hear it. Glad he's doing better. He is such a cutie pie. My little man would be jealous of those LEGO kits if he were here to see the pictures. He's LEGO obsessed. Star Wars LEGO. I just had to make a "new Rule" LEGO must stay in the house after us loosing pieces in the car. ( I guess I should go get down on hands and knees to search for a tiny sword- but I don't wanna!!)

Despite lizard tongue- your weekend sounds nice. I wish I lived nearby and could join in on chili and jenga and fun.

Love those Dougal humilation pics. I am glad Dexter is back to his old self; Lizard Tongue is such a great descriptor but it is sad to see a little one cry like that.

Natalie - Dougal has been such a good sport with everything. Riding in the bike basket? Okay! Wearing an infant's dress shirt and tie to a wedding? Okay! A big bow hairband? Sure!

Mama - I wish you lived closer too. The nice thing about having the blog is making wicked mom friends online:) LEGO is definitely an obsession around here, but Don is very purist about it. No LEGO that is themed so all the pirate and star wars stuff is out. He's really old school. We're really in love with the City LEGO because it's all about creating communities!

There is one exception. We saw this Indiana Jones LEGO with a WWII fighter plane with Indie in the front and what looks like a LEGO Sean Connery in the back.

Judy - Stopped by redbike to see the reno progress and had a good chat with Bruce! He finally got to meet little Dexter man and told me Isaac had wicked scratching too, way back in the day.

I SAW the sushi place but haven't gone in. Do I sense a lunch date we have to plan?

Trisha - It never amazes me, the things that my mom says in Chinese, and how hilariously they translate to Engrish. Yup. You read that right.

Yay! I see that you were wearing the Sparrow t-shirt I got you and Dougal is enjoying the hairband :) Simons purchases put to good use!

Ah, baby d skin looks much better. It kinda just looks like he has a rosy glow... minus the chin part.

Yes, sushi sounds great. I will e-mail you!
And I agree about Clif and the Spring launch party. Bruce says that they threw parties a few years ago, like Halloween and Christmas ones. Who would've thought? I don't know the reason that they stopped throwing parties, but we're gently pushing for one next month!
