Anchors Aweigh.

This little dude was hands down the cutest "cyclist" I saw on our trip. Crossing the street in Soho with his mama.

I hope Dexter turns out like this.

It was one of those little paddle bikes where you just use your feet to get around instead of using pedals. I think I've heard some people say this is better than training wheels. The kid had such a sense of ownership over his bike and he was able to keep up with his mom's normal adult pace.

They also had a dog.

Happy trails, little dude!

My youngest nephew has a modified little bike from which the pedals have been removed (http://pedalandcoast.blogspot.com/2009/05/another-blue-first-bike.html).
He can go really fast and coast a long way. I don't thinks he has quite got his brain around the mechanics of pedalling yet, so training wheels wouldn't help him at all. THis way, he can still ride a bike.

very cute! I love his hat!

I will agree those bikes Rock. tuber has one and he pretty much flies down the block on it. He turns into our driveway all tipped over like a racer. I love how people gasp the first time he does it b/c they are sure he's going to crash but he doesn't.

I am buying a Skuut for my niece, which is quite similar. The one thing I have been wondering about is if I need to get her a helmet to go with it. Bike helmets are mandatory in Alberta and I am wondering if this constitutes a bike. What do you all think?

That little guy looks so cute with his anchor hat! Perhaps in one year Dexter & Dougall will be ambling down the streets together, like those two buddies!

Ladies, Dexter will have to get one of those, particularly if it means satisfying his male need for speed!

Anon - I think a helmet is probably a good idea because people in AB have the tendency to freak out.

Sarah, you crack me up,lol. Love your opinions and honesty.

Anon: Depends where your child will be kickin' around; if she'll be gliding downhill with her feet up and no brakes, then definitely get her a helmet :)

That's just like the dandy horse - predecessor to the bicycle!

When EBC is running its Special Needs Learn to Bike course, the first thing we do is remove training wheels and remove pedals.

Training wheels prevent a child from developing a sense of balance and control. Pedals get in the way of using the feet to scooter along.

The kid in your photos won't have any troubles riding a pedal bike!

edbikes - All I remember about training wheels is they were really annoying and made it horrible to try to turn! I asked my dad to take them off.
