Birthday Party.

This weekend is shaping up to be an extended birthday celebration.

Last night a few friends gathered together at the Parkallen for some merriment with yours truly.

You're going to notice a little disconnect with the photos. They jump back and forth between samples from Raffaella's camera and mine. Her complete set of photos from the evening look amazing.

I was at the dollar store earlier this week and decided it would be very ridiculous and hilarious to have party hats. I have never had a party with party hats before. So I got the hats. A pack of pom poms. And with the power of a glue gun I was able to create these... uh... masterpieces.

I told people that they were inspired by tribbles.

Dexter and Dougal were very happy to model for me at home, but my good friends were likewise amenable to humiliation and silliness.

Like Chrissy.

And Leanne.

Adam.

And Lisa. We had the hats on rotation and it looked fabulous on many other guests, but my camera wasn't cooperating with the light so you won't get to see the glorious pom poms on everybody.

I love Raffaella's diptics.

I made little seating tags on bars of music.

This morning when I went to open my presents I discovered that I am the luckiest miss sarah ever!

So many treats for me!

Like a special top with lots of lace, cute note cards (I am a fan of written correspondence, I guess I'm old school that way), and a crazy super amazing hair band that Sable got me while she was in San Francisco.

And coffee (also from San Francisco, but from Justin), luxurious soap, and off-the-hook anchor earrings.

And a wine I like, a feathery hair ornament, silicone cupcake cups, and knit-by-Marilyn coffee sleeves.

And letterpress birthday cards!

There were also other wonderfully thoughtful gifts such as homemade biscotti and banana bread, mixed CD, and fresh raspberries.

In some ways convention dictates that we should chill out as we get older, and that our birthdays aren't a big deal. Maybe I've just seen people not want to talk about their birthdays because they get sensitive about getting older? I know some people genuinely don't care all that much about their birthday and never have.

I really like birthday parties. I don't feel the need to go overboard, like having a 5 course meal with elephant rides afterwards and celebrity appearances, but I do like sharing good stories and food with my friends.

The gifts are so humbling. They are all very thoughtful in their own way and show such care on the part of the giver of the gift. I am so happy to have good people in my life.

Thank you.

And that includes you readers too. Particularly those of you who keep coming back. I'm glad you could come to my party here, in spirit!

And yes, I did ride the Pashley.

Happy, happy! Here's to a wonderful year.

I, too, love birthday parties. I like to mention my age often. 41! People will quickly assume that it is a sore point-- why?-- and say things like, "Age is just a number." I always tell them-- I embrace my age. 41! Yay!

Meanwhile, it was my twins' birthday yesterday. I have two 8 year olds in my home now. Wow. It was loads of fun but only one bittersweet thing: I've made all my guys a homemade birthday crown each year (craft foam/ribbon) but one of my guys declared that he wasn't up for it this year. Oh well. His dad will sport his 42 birthday crown proudly.

Happy birthday, lovely lady!!! I dig the first pic of you.I must say that Dougal and Dexter look so very cute in their party hats.
Sweet handband from Sable. I wish we could get similar style in e-town.
Are you two going for the Mad Men casting call this year?

Sara - Thanks! I don't see what the big deal is either. I'm 30. I don't think I look "30" and I certainly don't feel old. The only reason I hesitate about telling people who old I am (it's like telling somebody you're pregnant) is the immediate follow up comments that I don't find particularly interesting.

Fiona - My birthday is actually today (the 25th). Christmas in July!

Judy - The party hats are hilarious:) Sable and I never did the madmen casting call for ourselves. Honestly, being Asian and winning a walk-on role? I'm not sure what other role I would have except the laundry woman:) We might enter Don's picture in. We took one for him last year but he uploaded it at the last minute when the internet was sad due to the the site congestion.

I love birthdays! The red bicyclette wine is so cute - a little thing that shows how well your friends know you :)

I love San Francisco. I notice the 'This Is San Francisco' book in a photo - probably the best book ever written!!

The hair band is amazing - you should wear it everyday! And Blue Bottle coffee... YUM. It doesn't get better. People line out the door for a cup of that stuff.

Happy Birthday!!

<3,
SF Baroness ; )

Dottie - It seems cheesy, but the bicyclette wine is great because of the bicycle, but also very tasty.

Lexy - I haven't been to SF in years, but look forward to visiting with Don sometime. He has never been, period. The "This is SF" book was for Dexter! I have put it away for now because he sort of destroys his books (loves to rip the pages out and stuff) so for now he can only read it under parental supervision.

I didn't know Blue Bottle was so WICKED! Look forward to firing that up in the machine.

Btw, how is the new job?

S*

new job is great. working on launching a bicycle campaign. hopefully the board approves it because it will be soo refreshing. and a great add to Edmonton's bicycle culture. more details soon :) :)

when you try Blue Bottle let me know your review - was it EPIC?!

when you plan a trip to SF also let me know, I can give you some places to check out! Or who knows maybe I'll be living there (that's my goal!) and I can give you an amazing tour of the City firsthand, on bicycle. Great ready for steep steep inclines!

A while back I was looking for a birthday card for a friend's son. I had zero luck finding what I was looking for. I told a group of friends about this problem one night while we were having a few drinks. We proceeded to get smashed and make up a bunch of greeting cards we found funny. I had been writing down the cards we made up and the next morning I read them. Much to my surprise the cards were still funny even when sober.
