Step 1: Let Dexter play with his helmet at home. So much fun! It's even handy as a teething toy.
Step 2: Take Dexter out in the Madsen on bike trail.
Little D is dubious.
And after running some errands and having coffee with a friend?
Helmet HATE!
It was so horrible, he even thought his mitts were conspiring against him. If he could talk I bet he would be saying, "I keep taking them off but there's this evil string connecting them to my coat! WTF?!"
Step 3: Concession. And he whimpered the whole way home.
So Dexter's helmet is still a teeny bit large. I put his hoodie on first and then the helmet on top.
It's a Louis Garneau Oro Dino Infant Cycling Helmet in size small.
Julian over at Totcycle has also written a great post about different bicycle helmets for little people.
My question is, how do you get the kids to stop ripping them off in the middle of a ride?

Give them a cookie? That always gets me to stop ripping off things. :)
He is the cutest ever, though. ;)
Isaac wore a Giro Minimoto with a detachable foam visor.I don't think he ever tried to take it off. The nice thing about Giro's youth helmets is the design; they're shaped so they're comfortabe to wear in strollers and child seats.I've heard good things about Giro's Me2 and Rodeo, both around $30.
Just guessing the Dexter might prefer to wear something "smoother" and lighter on his head.Although he always looks cute :)
Did your little guy like wearing it when he wasn't in the Madsen? Our 12-month old loves wearing her helmet (a Giro Me2) but currently we can only tow her around in our MEC trailer and she ends up slumped so far forward it looks terrible and can't be good for her neck.
It seems to be a common problem for young kids wearing helmets in trailers though... anyone have any suggestions for their comfort?
I'm hoping to check out a bobike mini this weekend!
Amanda - I'll have to start keeping more cookies in my purse!
Judy - Dexter just HATED it. But maybe he just needs to get used to it? Will browse those recommendations!
Dave - He likes putting it on and taking it off himself, but hates it once the chin strap is clipped in. When we ride in the Chariot he doesn't wear a helmet for those reasons. The fit isn't right and his neck is all wacky. The chariot has a 5-point harness, though, so it's still okay to go without helmet. On the Madsen, however, I think he should? Will need to double check with a traffic cop about it.
Helmet + Bobike must be a much better solution!
wow-there's so many teeth marks on his helmet already!
Awww, poor little D. That's how I feel about helmets, too, but I'm too old to throw a fit about it.
Great photos! I think you need to keep Dexter off of Copenhagenize for a little bit ... he's probably back there muttering about immature cycle cultures and bike fear and Ian's Walker's helmet study and yadda yadda.
I'd imagine this is somewhat akin to teaching a puppy how to walk on a leash. Good luck with this. Has he seen his Daddy in a helmet?? In any case, these pics are priceless and will someday be perfect at the engagement party slideshow.
Sarah!
We (I am Dave's other half) got a bobike today at redbike, and took it for its maiden voyage this afternoon. Score! Baby = happy, parents = happiest!
Now I just need to figure out how to come up with a reason to get a Pashley. That's one pretty bike! Or an Electra. I'd settle for that, too :)
So cute. Now all he needs is a miniature kids bicycles to chew on and he'll be a proper cycle baby :D
Aww. He really hates it doesn't he? My kids were three-ish when I started doing helmets with them, so I could explain that they don't get to ride unless they're wearing it. They still hate having the straps tightened properly.
I've special-ordered the BoBike Junior, so I'll be able to report how that works (hopefully soon!) for older kids who are still too little or too lacking in confidence to pedal their own bikes on rides.
Sable - I don't think it compromises the structure all that much
Dottie - I know, why would we look like all crying in our blog photos?
Julian - Hee hee, I agree! Perhaps I'll just keep towing him in the trailer for now. Not as much cargo room, but it's enclosed and has a 5-point harness.
She rides - It's exactly like teaching a puppy to walk on a leash! Practice makes... better:)
Gwyn - We went to look a push bike for Dexter the other day but his legs are still too short;(
Pashley is beautiful, indeed!
Gemma - He could use an effective teething toy these days!
Deb - Yeah, he'll either wear it and cry in the Madsen or else continue riding in his Chariot trailer. Nothing looks more stupid than a bike helmet that doesn't even fit properly. What's the point?
