Our living room computer desk was bowing due to the weight of our big iMac and a variety of components that accompany the speakers. It was a nondescript, inexpensive IKEA desk which will now make a fine colouring station for Dexter.
We use our computer as a television for the living room, and it's generally where I edit photos and where we play our music. When we first got it I didn't know that we would use it so much and the new desk now easily satisfies the requirements of the components, work space, computer, my camera stuff, and it's retro to boot!
Don's web surfing saavy found this solid wood (maple?) desk on kijiji for $25.
I think it was such a good deal because it weighs around 200 pounds.

They just don't build things like this anymore! It's really beautifully constructed, and has weathered the years well with only some minor cosmetic blemishes that reflect its sense of history.
One of the drawers has these little paper file slots.
Our components fit perfectly in the big cupboard where a typewriter used to be stored.
But the thing was so heavy. Don and his father managed to make it up the walk and halfway up the front steps before gloves were slipping off and people were losing grip.
Just then, two helpful neighbours were cruising by on their bikes. They turned around and dropped their bikes at the sidewalk and came to offer two more hands. Just like that.

And with the added help our new/old desk make its way into our home safe and sound.

if the 2 people were completely different people driving by in a car, do you think they would've stopped and helped ?
probably not - it's nice to have helpful, bikey neighbours
Ah, that's Edmonton for you. There are some really good people here.
