Tonight was the first night during these frosty sub zero temperatures that I've ventured out to grab a drink and some supper with a friend. We went to the Bothy and it was busy, warm, and delicious.
Actually, the ride from my place over there is really great! Pretty much very quiet tree-lined streets the whole way and approximately 10 minutes worth of riding.

And the trusty cropped puffy vest with fur-trimmed hood. Warm, but doesn't cause you to sweat. I didn't wear the hood because I wore my winter Bern helmet which makes my head gigantic.

But riding in these temperatures, though not ridiculously cold, still requires layers.
I was dressed super casually today, with just some black jeans and a cashmere sweater.
Then I put on my trusty hoodie of the last 5 years, that I got on super sale in Montreal.
And a long red scarf.
And my boots.

And the trusty cropped puffy vest with fur-trimmed hood. Warm, but doesn't cause you to sweat. I didn't wear the hood because I wore my winter Bern helmet which makes my head gigantic.
If you look closely you can see my puffy mitts clutched in my right hand.
Ta-da! Ready to roll.
I was out with my friend Tom and we rode halfway home together before we needed to split off and go our separate ways. We were commenting on how great it is to have fresh air in your lungs, particularly after a day of work and a whole pile of food.
Since it was late at night there were almost no cars out on the road and we could ride side by side and talk, just like riding with my friends when I was a kid. Love it.
And I wasn't even cold.

Yay for nights out! I was at a birthday party in the Allendale area so I was nearby :)
hey miss sarah,
I really enjoy reading your blog about your life and cycling (:
You make it seem so real and easy to incoperate cycling into daily urban life.
I envy that, and hope that I will be able to cycle and drive less when I grow up and go to work or something.
Yeah, I'm a fifteen year old Malaysian, where high crime rates, traditional thinking and reckless motorists kinda deter me from using my bike as a main form of transport.
keep on cycling :D and keep safe.
hugs, June.
I wanted a winter bern helmet so bad last year but when I tried it on it hurt my temples - it was really squeezing my head. I guess it's just not a good fit for me.
Lovely evening you had! I had a similar one on Tuesday, after a whole day battling with gusty winds, my ride home at 9pm after dinner with friends was wonderful, calm and crisp! I had nice rosy cheeks by the time I got home :D L x
What is that intriguing picture on the door behind you?..
Sable - And we have another night out tomorrow, yay!
June - Thank you for coming and enjoying the blog! You keep safe too, it can get pretty hairy out there.
Dag - Ouch, that sounds horrid! Perhaps you can just go with the regular helmet and earmuffs route?
naturally - It's the best way to get around!
Velouria - Ah, that is a commissioned piece by Raymond Biesinger. He is an old friend from newspaper days but also a successful illustrator and print artist. We had him do this one after Don won his first election:)
Go check out more of Rayomond's work!

i love the cold, i love dressing up warm and going to some cosy bar for a glass of red wine. There is something so wholesome about it.
