First Winter Bike Ride!

November 28, 2011

Nothing earth shattering to report, just took winter Kona out for her first spin this year. We haven't had too much snow, but with the wacky rain we had yesterday (which is generally all frozen today), I was very thankful for the studded tires.

Temperatures weren't cold, so that wasn't really an issue. Just put on the parka and started pedaling.

Today's bike ride is brought to you by Don, who very kindly pumped up my tires for me.

One other thing to note: I really keep my winter saddle low! Low enough so that I can get a solid toe down to deploy the tripod, in the event of bailing out. Riding that way on my Pashley would be super weird, but on the winter bike (mountain bike) it's very comfortable.

Had lunch with a lady friend, picked up a bag of groceries. All that normal stuff.

How is winter riding treating you guys?

I have no winter bicycle, and have had to retire the skinny roadbike for the year. Next year, I will have a Kona of my own. For now, jealous of you.

Lizzy - My Kona is from high school:) I never thought it fit, but now that I've mixed a few things up, I sort of love that ugly thing.

Just can't believe that studded tyres allow you to cycle on what appears to be solid ice? And not just in patches. What tyres are you riding on?

Wow, that's some seriously icy road- wouldn't even try that without studs.

I've been seriously contemplating studded tires for at least one bike, but can't find any in 26x1 3/8", and haven't even looked for 28" roadster tires.

The only sizes I've seen are 700c and 26" mountain bike tires, none of which fit my bike. The bike shop guy and I were rolling our eyes about the fact that studded tires are available in 650B, which is a trendy size, but not 26 1/38" which would fit the thousands of raleigh sports out there being ridden year round.

I wish I'd had studded tyres on my bike last winter when I took a tumble on some ice and broke my pedal and dented my pride! As yet, winter hasn't set in here. We have lots of rain, thankfully no snow or ice.

What is that lovely purse you have in your basket Miss Sarah?

Ha, deploy the tripod. Funny. :)

Looks pretty nasty out there for you, although I know it's nothing compared to what's in store once winter really gets going. Chicago is freakishly mild and there's been no snow yet. I'm hoping that lasts at least another week or two.

welsh - Maybe some of it is just experience? I don't lean into my corners, that's for sure! I find one continuous patch of ice easier to ride on than the slushy oatmeal snow. That stuff is impossible.

cycler - I hope you find good ones that fit!

Emma - boo about your wipe-out! I'm assuming it wasn't lovely and akin to landing softly on a fluffy pile of snow?

Anon - It's a purse from Roots. All Canadian!

Jessica - Congrats on the baby! Hopefully you'll be back in the saddle for spring and summer:)

Dottie - I love that you know what the "tripod" means! Last year was freakishly mild too... until late in January. So I get out there while it's still decent! I know it can get much much worst. Remember when that highway was snowed-in in Chicago? It was positively post-apocalyptic!
