Remember When...

November 18, 2011

I was large and in charge while pregnant with Dexter? Well prepare yourself for Miss Sarah with baby bump the sequel, since I am currently pregnant with baby #2.

So every post you have read about me riding in the last 12 weeks? That's right, riding while pregnant. I can't say I'm looking forward to some of the quirks of being pregnant, which is the vast array of advice you get. What I've learned from the first time around is that you really have to take it all with a grain of salt, boil it down to the lowest common denominator, and just take the helpful stuff.

Now, I'll preface my stories by saying I probably have more exposure to moms than most people, since I teach so many kids.

I remember this one mom who found out I rode my bike while I was 20ish weeks, and she flicked me on my forehead. Like, flicked her finger... ON MY FACE. It was not cool.

And there was another mom who advised me to go to the mall more often, so I could walk around and get cardio. What?!

The first time I was pregnant, it was always surprising to hear from people what they thought I could do to stay healthy for 40 weeks. Most people suggest walking and swimming as safe activities. And although swimming sounds awful nice, getting to a pool and getting changed and processed, really doesn't fit into my busy schedule.

I do walk, almost every day, with Dougal. And of course there is the riding.

Like most cycling mamas will tell you, you've really got to talk to your own doctor and know your own body before you do any strenuous exercise (though I don't fine biking very strenuous) while pregnant. If it doesn't feel good, then stop.

Luckily, other than more rapid weight gain this time around, I feel much the same as with Dexter - which is absolutely normal.

That means I'll be riding until it no longer feels fine. Last time, it was until the day before my water broke and I went to the hospital. This time... who knows?

So here's to another 28ish weeks of riding with the bump!

Yay Sarah! And congratulations to you and Don. You just listen to your body and your doctor and keep on riding as long as it works for you. One of the most important skills a mom can have is the ability to ignore advice designed to make her feel bad.

ahhhh congrats! yay.

and WTF for the finger flicker. not cool at all.

I wish I had been hip to biking when I was pregnant. I hated walking so much. Could barely fit in the car. Wish I had a trike then I bet it would have been great and I would have yelled a lot less at people. ( I was always yelling anytime I had to walk any distance out of my way- it hurt so badly. Tuber was right on my pelvis for months. I was so happy when he was born I was doing calistenics at 5am after he was wisked away to the nursery...)

Enjoy #2 two growing inside you. I'm sorry about all the flack from others. It could be they are jealous. Heck, I was telemark skiing at 8 months!

I'm so happy for you and your family!! Congratulations! Dexter gets a playmate! I think that you handle those criticisms extremely smartly, safely (we women SHOULD be able to ride throughout all parts of our lives!). As a young woman of 24, I think you are a wonderful role model.

Thank you for writing!

Ooo, I'm jealous. I am just a couple weeks further along than you but I have been sick sick sick. I've managed to ride my commute, about 9 miles round trip, just twice in the past 8 weeks. But those were two fun rides! It's tricky because even though I'm feeling a little better now, I have missed the gradual ease into winter biking through fall, and now it's just darn cold. At least I have my little built in furnace this winter. I look forward to hearing how the pregnancy goes for you, and chiming in now and then myself. I hope you gave the face flicker a horrified gasp when she did that. Unbelievable!

Congrats!

Wonderful news, Sarah! Keep on riding! Never mind those naysayers...I rode to work from Bonnie Doon to RONA until I was ready to pop. I only fell once.

Congrats!
I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first and had high hopes of cycling far into my pregnancy. Unfortunately I sprained my abdominal wall a few weeks ago (not while biking, but getting up too fast from a dentist's chair) and am unable to bike probably until baby arrives - pushing down with my right foot hurts too much. So much for the fantasy of biking to all my prenatal appointments...

It never would've occurred to me to keep riding while pregnant had I not found your blog, so I'm cheering your riding on!

Congratulations! Looking forward to reading about your rides. Poo-pooh to the naysayers.

Congratulations and keep on biking! I just had my baby 2 months ago and commuted into my 7th month and biked shorter distances up until the end. It was so great to know that you had also biked with Dexter. No one flicked me in the head, but I did get some condescending concern! Keep it up!

Congratulations Sarah!!!! Glad to hear you're feeling good.

I have lots of nice memories of riding with my big pregnant belly. I got lots of stares, but I didn't care! I was having fun! I actually ended up doing a little riding at two weeks overdue, trying to get the baby to join us.

Congrats again, and wishing you a relatively easy pregnancy.

Seeing as I still can't believe the number of otherwise healthy patients I see who think that once they're pregnant, they can't possibly do anything at all remotely active (ie. 19th or maybe 18th century thinking ;-) ), it's not at all surprising that many people are amazed by a pregnant woman doing something visibly active. My understanding is that the medical recommendations against cycling in pregnancy are in terms of safety re: changes in centre of gravity with pregnancy such that women might be more off-balance and possible injury to the baby if they then were to fall onto their abdomen - they don't take into account the variety of types of cycling that exist. Thus, maybe not a good idea to do high-speed downhills on a road bike while pregnant (never mind that at some point you wouldn't be able to bend forward enough to reach a road bike's handlebars) or to do heavy-duty mountain-biking or BMX'ing, but I would encourage the kind of cycling you do, Sarah, along the lines of "keep up the activities that you're used to doing as long as safe, modify as necessary". Just don't freeze on days like today in Edmonton ;-) . And congrats on the pregnancy!

Congrats! Like roc_phd I had a rough first trimester with my pregnancy and ended up taking the bus an awful lot, but was able to get back into the swing of things around the 12 week mark and kept cycling pretty much up to 40 weeks. Hopefully your first weeks have been less nausea and fatigue-filled than mine were!

I look forward to more stories of pregnant cycling. :)

Thanks thanks thanks for all the nice wishes, congrats, and support! Sure, I may get flicked on the face, but it's nice to know that I've got a little posse that's got my back.

I'll write more about how things are progressing, as things progress:)

Congratulations, Sarah, and ride on! I found the second time around (my second little one is 6 weeks old tomorrow), people refrained from giving advice, so that's something to look forward to.

Awww, this made me so happy!!! I have read your blog for a LONG time now, as a fellow Canadian woman who likes to ride my pretty bike as my form of transportation, but am a bad non-commenter. But, I wanted to pipe up now, because I'm so happy for you and Don and Dexter, and Dougal. So exciting!

Also, I would have lost it if someone flicked me in the face, especially due to judging my choices. I am a staunch advocate that women are SO much stronger and more capable than most people give us credit. I plan to become a midwife someday, so it comes with the territory to be somewhat preachy about women's rights and abilities, especially surrounding pregnancy. But, like many have said, you do what feels right FOR YOU, and obviously biking is a huge part of your life, so, you go girl!

Anyways, congratulations again, and I can't wait to see more empowering Miss Sarah posts :)
